The LaGrange Safety Town is a one-week course designed to teach a child safe practices for both at school and at home. The program educates children in a way that ensures they will grow into safe, healthy adults. The program is held each summer for children entering kindergarten at Keystone Schools. Each day the program explores different safety topics.
Energy Services Advisor Don Foster captured the children’s attention using the cooperative’s Hazard Hamlet, a small-scale “hamlet” to demonstrate electrical hazards children may commonly find around their home or neighborhood.
The Hazard Hamlet uses lights and sound to demonstrate scenarios. Foster then explains why the situation can be dangerous and answers questions from the children about the situation. Safety Town also teaches children about traffic, bike, pedestrian, seat belt, and railroad crossing safety.
