Lorain County Meals on Wheels offers nutritious, home-delivered meals to seniors living in Wellington, Camden, Huntington, Brighton, Penfield, Pittsfield and Rochester townships.     

The Meals on Wheels program received an important boost from the Lorain-Medina Rural Electric Cooperative People Fund in April when it was awarded a $5,862 grant. Funds will be used to ensure that nutritious meals are provided five days a week to clients’ homes. Each client also receives two frozen backup meals as a backup plan for “weather-permitting days” or to use on a weekend if needed. Seniors also receive safety checks as part of the Meals on Wheels program. 

In 2014, 26 at-risk seniors living in the LMRE service area received home-delivered meals from the Lorain County Office on Aging. They represented 60 percent of the people receiving services from the southern satellite office.      

“The goal is to make the person safe and independent in the home for as long as possible,” said Carolynn Bishop, licensed social worker.      

The Southern Lorain County Office on Aging offers a comprehensive mix of services to protect the health, well-being and independence of seniors. The cooperative has been supporting the southern office by helping to sponsor the annual Wellington Balloon Fest at Clare Mar Lakes in Huntington Township in August. 

Services include support for seniors, transportation assistance to medical appointments, education, information and resources about how to improve health and well-being, emergency food assistance, benefits assistance and Meals on Wheels.    

“If we can’t help someone, we know someone that can,” explained Dottie Pogorelc, office manager for the southern satellite office.      

Citizens 60 and over or adults with disabilities can meet with staff for an assessment to see if they qualify.
